Pregnant Woman’s Baby Dies Following Crash on Highway 29 in Athens-Clarke County

On August 20, 2024, at approximately 10:45 AM, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to a vehicle crash in the 1000 block of Highway 29 southbound. The initial investigation indicates that the driver of a 2018 Kia Optima rear-ended a dump truck and trailer that was turning into a private driveway.

The driver of the Optima, Abbigale Massey, 25, of Athens, Georgia, was treated at the scene by Athens-Clarke Fire and Emergency Services and EMS. Massey, who was 22 weeks pregnant, was transported to a local hospital in serious condition. On August 21, 2024, investigators learned that the baby had passed away due to injuries sustained in the crash. The mother remains in serious but stable condition. The driver of the dump truck, a 48-year-old male from Winder, was not injured.
