On August 21, 2024, the Albany Police Department’s Criminal Investigative Bureau arrested 35-year-old Gernardric Deangelo Pittman on charges of Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime. The charges are connected to a cold case from 2021.

On August 8, 2021, Albany Police Officers responded to a shooting call in the 1500 block of West Gordon Avenue. Upon arrival, they found 8-year-old Nigel Brown deceased. He had been struck and killed by gunfire while asleep in his bed. The incident was the result of a drive-by shooting that occurred around 11 p.m.

The arrest of Pittman was made possible by a woman who came forward with video evidence she had obtained from another individual. Albany Police Department investigators confirmed that the drive-by shooting was motivated by gang violence.

On Thursday morning, the Albany Police Department held a press conference to announce the arrest in connection with Nigel’s death. Nigel’s mother, Yolander Brown-Ford, expressed her gratitude, saying, “First of all, I want to say thank God. Thank Albany Police Department for doing what they have done to solve this case. It’s not the end. It’s just the beginning.”

Pittman was transported to the Dougherty County Jail. Authorities indicated that more arrests are expected.
