Woman Fatally Struck by Vehicle at Athens Bus Stop, Suspect Arrested

On Sunday, August 11th, at approximately 6:13 PM, Athens-Clarke County Police responded to the 2000 block of Atlanta Highway regarding a female who was struck by a vehicle while she waited at a bus stop. The vehicle then left the scene. Responding officers and emergency personnel initiated life-saving efforts, and the victim was transported to a local hospital. The victim, Shelby Cox, 45, of Athens, GA, succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

During the investigation, the suspect was identified and apprehended with the assistance of the Oconee County Sheriff’s Department. Jeffery Scott Tate, 58, of Athens, GA, was arrested and charged with Murder, Hit and Run (resulting in serious injury/death), Reckless Driving, and Failure to Maintain Lane.

This investigation is ongoing. The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is seeking to identify a witness who was standing next to the victim when the incident occurred.
