Man Shot After Assaulting Road Workers and Attempting to Steal Truck on HWY 280 W

On August 7, 2024, at approximately 10:20 A.M., Crisp County E-911 Communications dispatched deputies to a disturbance on HWY 280 W near the Crossroad Store Road intersection. The situation escalated into a shooting.

Initial reports indicate that a Grey Dodge Charger, driven by 40-year-old Calvin Williams Jr. from Albany, Georgia, stopped behind a road construction truck. Williams exited the vehicle and threatened the construction workers, declaring he would kill them. He then assaulted one worker with rebar and attempted to steal the truck. During the assault, another worker retrieved a firearm and shot Williams, wounding him.

A Sumter County Sheriff’s Deputy, who was returning from court, was flagged down and provided assistance. Williams was stable and communicated with authorities before being transported by Air Evac. Crisp County Fire Rescue, Crisp County EMS, and Georgia State Patrol also responded to the scene.

Authorities later confirmed that Williams was involved in a hit-and-run in Sumter County prior to this incident. They also found a bag of suspected marijuana and cocaine in Williams’ vehicle.

The ongoing investigation has led to the following charges against Williams:

  • (2) Counts of Aggravated Assault
  • (1) Count of Criminal Attempt to Commit an Armed Robbery
  • (1) Count of Entering an Automobile
  • (1) Count of Possession of a Controlled Substance (Cocaine)
  • (1) Count of Possession of Marijuana Less Than an Ounce
  • (2) Counts of Simple Battery
