GBI Investigates Atlanta Officer-Involved Shooting of Suspect in Stolen Vehicle

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has been called in to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Atlanta, GA, at the request of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred when a deputy from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office FAST Unit attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Harwell Road NW.

According to preliminary information, the deputy observed a vehicle committing a traffic offense and initiated a stop. The driver, later identified as Travon Yarbrough, age 18, of Atlanta, GA, fled from the scene as the vehicle turned onto Delmar Lane NW, eventually crashing off-road. Yarbrough then reportedly fled on foot.

During the pursuit, Yarbrough allegedly produced a firearm from his clothing, prompting a deputy to discharge one round, striking Yarbrough. Despite being wounded, Yarbrough continued to evade deputies but was later located in the backyard of a nearby residence. Officers found a firearm in close proximity to where the shooting occurred and subsequently took Yarbrough into custody.

Yarbrough was transported to a local hospital where he is reported to be in stable condition. It was later determined that the vehicle Yarbrough was driving had been reported stolen.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation into the incident. Upon completion, the case will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review, as per standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

No deputies were injured during the incident.
