Lee County Man Arrested for Murder in Father’s Death

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has arrested and charged Tommy Clinton Jones, 47, of Lee County, with one count of Felony Murder and two counts of Aggravated Assault in connection with the death of his father, Tommy Lee Jones, 69.

The incident took place on Thursday, July 4, 2024. At approximately 3:15 a.m., the Lee County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI to conduct a death investigation. According to preliminary information, Lee County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence on the 1400 block of Smithville Road in Leesburg after 911 operators received a call reporting shots fired.

Upon arriving at the scene, deputies heard gunfire emanating from within the home. They called out for Jones to come out of the house, but he did not comply immediately, resulting in a standoff. After a tense period, Jones eventually exited the home and was taken into custody by the deputies. He was subsequently booked into the Lee County Jail. During the incident, deputies also secured a firearm from the scene.

The GBI is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the death of Tommy Lee Jones. The case will be handed over to the Southwestern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution once the investigation is complete.
