Suspect Arrested After Hostage Situation on Atlanta Bus Ends in Fatal Shooting

At approximately 4:35 p.m. on June 11, 2024, Atlanta Police Zone 5 officers responded to reports of gunfire and a possible hostage situation on a bus near 45 Ivan Allen Jr. Blvd. NE. Upon arrival, the bus fled, initiating a multi-jurisdictional pursuit involving several agencies.

The chase concluded near 5107 Hugh Howell Rd. in Stone Mountain, GA, where the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Joseph Grier, was apprehended without further incident. Officers discovered an adult victim on the bus with a gunshot wound, who was transported to the hospital in critical condition and later died from the injury.

Several other passengers were on the bus at the time, but no additional injuries were reported. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
