Former Sumter County Detention Officer Arrested for Drug Smuggling

Former Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Officer, Yakeema Shantrell Mercer, was arrested on Monday, May 20th, 2024, for allegedly attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the jail.

Mercer, along with two other individuals, faced charges including Possession With Intent To Distribute a Controlled Substance, Items Prohibited By Inmates, and Identity Fraud after a thorough investigation by the Investigative Division.

Mercer surrendered herself and was released on bond. One of her alleged accomplices, Camry Kemarurius May, previously held on murder charges, was relocated following the new charges. The third suspect, Quintavious Lamontae Williams, who is on probation, remains at large.

Sheriff Eric D. Bryant emphasized the importance of safety for Sumter County citizens and Sheriff’s Office staff, condemning such actions as intolerable.
