GBI Probes Robbery Suspect’s Shooting by DeKalb County Police in Lithonia Incident

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting an investigation into an officer-involved shooting in DeKalb County, GA, following a request from the DeKalb County Police Department. The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, around 9:30 a.m. in the 2000 block of Evans Mill Road.

According to preliminary information, detectives from the DeKalb County Police Department were in the area searching for a robbery suspect when they encountered Delano Gaynor, 28, of Lithonia, GA. Gaynor, who was walking through a parking lot at the location, allegedly brandished a firearm when detectives attempted to approach him. In response, the detectives fired their weapons, striking Gaynor.

Gaynor fled the scene but later surrendered near the entrance of a shopping center. Responding officers provided assistance and medical aid until emergency medical services (EMS) arrived. Gaynor sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to an area hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition.

No officers were injured in the incident.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation into the shooting. Once the investigation is concluded, the case file will be forwarded to the Stone Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
