Arrest Made in Fatal Shooting of Infant, Suspect Charged in Multi-Jurisdictional Operation

On May 2, 2024, Desmontrez Mathis, a suspect in the fatal shooting of a three-year-old infant in Athens on March 8th, was arrested in Augusta, Georgia, following a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement operation. Mathis faces charges including Murder (Malice and Felony Murder), Aggravated Assault, and violation of the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. Additionally, he faces a federal charge for Unlawful Flight and is currently held in Clarke County Jail.

The arrest was made possible through the collaborative efforts of law enforcement personnel from ACCPD’s Criminal Investigation Division, the Middle Georgia FBI Safe Streets Task Force, the CSRA FBI Safe Streets Task Force, and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department.

Meanwhile, the fourth suspect in the shooting, 18-year-old Dakious Echols from Athens, remains at large. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact Sergeant Black at 762-400-7058 or via email at scott.black@accgov.com.
