Lumpkin Man Arrested by GBI for Stewart County Murder

Jerrell Staples, 37, of Lumpkin, GA, has been arrested and charged by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) with Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony in connection to the death of Jason Jones, 34, also of Lumpkin, GA. The Lumpkin Police Department requested the GBI’s assistance in the investigation, with support from the Stewart County Sheriff’s Office.

Preliminary details suggest that on April 26, 2024, around 12:15 p.m., Lumpkin Police responded to a report of gunshots in the 300 block of Main Street. Upon arrival, officers found Staples, the homeowner, and discovered Jones deceased in the front yard. Interviews indicated a confrontation between Staples and Jones on the front porch resulted in the shooting.

Staples has been transferred to Randolph County Jail following his arrest.
