Warrants Issued for Inmate on Murder Charges for December Shooting in Columbus

Gregory Johnson, already in custody for a Home Invasion charge, received warrants on April 19, 2024, for Murder, Aggravated Assault, Criminal Damage to Property in the First Degree, and Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Crime. The warrants were served while he was in jail.

The charges stem from an incident on December 18, 2023, when Columbus Police officers responded to a shooting in the 500 block of Dirk Way. They found Demetreus Heard, a Black male, with a gunshot wound. Heard was taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital in critical condition and remained hospitalized until his death on December 28, 2023, at 2:12 p.m.

At a preliminary hearing on April 22, 2024, the charges against Johnson were bound over to Superior Court.
