Lovejoy Park Shooting Suspect Apprehended After Year-Long Pursuit
After a year-long pursuit, Oliver Choyce, the final suspect in the deadly shooting at Lovejoy Park, has been apprehended. The incident, which occurred on June 29, 2023, resulted in the death of a victim who sustained gunshot wounds to the neck, head, and arm.
Led by Chief Rick Webster, the dedicated detectives of the Lovejoy Police Department tirelessly worked to identify Choyce as one of the three murder suspects. On July 25, 2023, warrants were obtained for Choyce, charging him with Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm or Knife during the Commission of a Crime, and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
Sheriff Levon Allen activated “The Elite Fugitive Squad” to pursue Choyce and ensure justice was served. Despite Choyce being the last of the three suspects to evade capture, relentless efforts were made by law enforcement. 18-year-old Kwame McGinty was arrested on June 30, 2023, and 17-year-old Alex Hampton was arrested on October 30, 2023, both charged with murder.
On January 31, 2024, Sheriff Levon Allen issued a direct appeal to Choyce to surrender himself. Finally, on March 25, 2024, under mounting pressure from the Lovejoy Police Department, Clayton County Police Department, and Clayton County Fugitive Squad, Oliver Choyce surrendered to fugitive investigators without incident.
Choyce is currently in custody at the Martha Glaze Juvenile Facility. Sheriff Levon Allen personally reached out to the victim’s mother, offering reassurance that all three suspects are now in custody, allowing her to rest a little easier knowing justice has been served.
