At the request of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agents are looking into an officer-involved shooting in DeKalb County, GA.

Deontre’ Thomas, 25, from Atlanta, GA, sustained injuries in the incident, while no officers were harmed.

Preliminary details suggest that on March 9, 2024, around 1:15 a.m., Thomas was spotted outside the DeKalb County Jail allegedly dropping off contraband. As officers approached him, he fled down Memorial Drive, abandoning his running car parked on the street. Despite pursuit, officers lost track of Thomas momentarily. Around 2:30 a.m., DeKalb County Police Department (DKPD) responded to a 911 call reporting a person shot at a residence on Emerald Drive, Atlanta, GA. Upon arrival, officers found Thomas and his car, which was linked to the earlier incident outside the jail.

Thomas was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation, and upon completion, the case will be forwarded to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
