Former Lowndes County School District Superintendent Arrested on Theft Charges

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has arrested and charged Shawn Haralson, aged 54, of Statesboro, GA, with 17 felony counts of Theft by Taking and five felony counts of unauthorized use of a financial transaction card. The investigation, initiated on April 3, 2023, by the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, uncovered Haralson’s alleged misuse of school-owned fuel for personal travel outside of Lowndes County, while he served as the Superintendent for the Lowndes County School District.

After thorough investigation, the case file was forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for review in the Fall of 2023. Subsequently, the Lowndes County Grand Jury reviewed the findings of the GBI investigation and returned a true bill of indictment on March 1, 2024.

On the same day, Haralson was taken into custody with the assistance of the Bacon County Sheriff’s Office. The case will now proceed to prosecution by the District Attorney for the Southern Judicial Circuit.
