Bibb County Deputy Terminated for Breach of Security Leading to Inmate Escape

Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Travaris Freeman has been terminated for a breach of security that resulted in the escape of four inmates from the Bibb County jail on October 16, 2023.

An internal affairs investigation revealed that Freeman failed to maintain the safety and security of the jail, leading to a violation of several Bibb County Sheriff’s Office policies, including Unbecoming Conduct, Unsatisfactory Performance, and Jail Operations.

The policies state that conduct unbecoming an employee includes actions that bring the Sheriff’s Office into disrepute, reflect discredit upon the employee, or impair the operation and efficiency of the Sheriff’s Office. Employees are required to maintain sufficient competency to perform their duties properly and uphold the highest standards of efficiency. Specific jail operation protocols include using a flashlight during night checks, ensuring visible signs of life in inmates, and avoiding sole reliance on closed-circuit television for supervision.

The incident came to light during routine checks and was promptly turned over to the Office of Professional Standards for investigation. Sheriff David Davis directed the termination of Freeman following the investigation.

The ongoing investigation may lead to further disciplinary actions regarding other staff members involved in the incident.
