Amerson River Park Playground in Macon Closes November 5-6 for Repairs

MACON, Georgia – The playground at Amerson River Park in Macon will close Thursday and Friday, November 5 and 6, so crews can make repairs, Macon-Bibb County officials said.

Workers will replace three slides and the adventure tube. They will also recoat the bonded rubber ground covering and replace sections of it around the poles.

Rain could extend the closure. If weather delays the work, the area may stay closed additional days. Macon-Bibb County will post updates on its Facebook page.

“With Amerson being one of our top destinations in the county and a major draw for the region, the playground is very heavily used, and we need to make some much-needed repairs,” said Michael Glisson, Parks & Beautification Director.

About Amerson River Park

Amerson River Park opened in 2015 with an event that drew an estimated 3,000 people. It sits on the site of the former water works treatment plant. A $5.5 million federal grant paid for a 15-month overhaul.

The park now covers 180 acres. It has the playground, seven miles of paved and unpaved trails, multiple pavilions, a boat launch and takeout, scenic overlooks and outdoor exercise equipment. Several hundred thousand people visit each year.

Trail expansion planned

Plans call for extending the trail system north and south. To the north, Macon-Bibb County has acquired more than 200 acres of wooded land along the river that can be used to grow the park. To the south, crews are already building trails to connect Amerson River Park to the rest of the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail.

When finished, the network will run along the river from Arkwright Road through Historic Riverside and Rose Hill Cemeteries and Downtown to Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park. It will also link neighborhoods along Riverside Drive to Historic Pleasant Hill, Shirley Hills, Downtown and the Mill Hill East Macon Arts Village.
