Suspect Killed After Exchanging Gunfire With Georgia Troopers in Brooks County

BROOKS COUNTY, Ga. – A man died Friday night after exchanging gunfire with Georgia State Patrol troopers who responded to assist the Brooks County Sheriff’s Office during a domestic violence-related incident.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, troopers were dispatched at approximately 8:01 p.m. on July 24 to assist sheriff’s deputies after reports of an armed man was threatening to kill his wife and other individuals inside a residence.

When law enforcement officers arrived, they encountered the armed suspect, who refused to comply with repeated lawful commands.

Authorities said the suspect opened fire on responding officers, shooting multiple rounds in their direction.

Troopers returned fire, striking the suspect.

After the scene was secured, officers immediately began providing life-saving measures before the suspect was transported to a local hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

No injuries to law enforcement officers or other individuals were reported.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested to conduct an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting, which is standard procedure in Georgia. Upon completion, the GBI will submit its findings to the appropriate prosecuting attorney for review.

The identity of the deceased has not been released, and the investigation remains ongoing.
