Georgia Deputies Seize Drone, Drugs and Contraband Bound for Ware State Prison

JACKSON, Ga. – A traffic stop on Interstate 75 in Butts County led to the seizure of a large drone, illegal drugs and other contraband that investigators believe was destined for delivery to Ware State Prison, according to the Butts County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation began Tuesday, July 21, when a Butts County deputy stopped a vehicle traveling southbound on Interstate 75 for a traffic violation.

During the stop, deputies recovered a large drone, approximately six ounces of suspected MDMA, commonly known as Ecstasy, about five pounds of suspected marijuana, approximately 15 pounds of cigarette tobacco, JB Weld, knives, dozens of cell phones, a PlayStation gaming system, Meta smart glasses and multiple charging devices.

Investigators believe the items were intended to be smuggled into Ware State Prison using the drone. Authorities said criminal street gangs continue to play a significant role in the trafficking of contraband into Georgia correctional facilities.

The sheriff’s office did not release the identities of those involved or announce any criminal charges related to the seizure.

Sheriff Gary Long said drone-assisted prison smuggling operations have become increasingly common and described the issue as a growing public safety concern across Georgia.

Long said contraband, including illegal drugs and electronic devices, contributes to violence, organized criminal activity and gang influence inside correctional facilities, undermining efforts to rehabilitate inmates before they return to their communities.

The sheriff also called for greater attention to security challenges within Georgia’s prison system, including contraband smuggling, gang activity, staffing shortages and violence.

The investigation remains ongoing.
