GBI Investigating Deputy-Involved Shooting After Driver in Stolen Vehicle Flees Traffic Stop
CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is examining an officer-involved shooting that occurred during an attempted traffic stop involving a stolen vehicle late Monday night in Forest Park.
According to the GBI, the incident occurred at approximately 11:18 p.m. on June 15, 2026, when deputies with the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a stolen vehicle near the intersection of Jonesboro Road and Conley Road.
Investigators said deputies attempted to block in the stolen vehicle during the stop. As they did so, the driver allegedly reversed and struck the front of a marked patrol vehicle.
Authorities said one deputy then issued verbal commands for the driver to stop.
Instead, the driver accelerated forward, prompting the deputy to fire multiple shots toward the vehicle, according to preliminary information released by the GBI.
The driver continued fleeing the scene and escaped in the stolen vehicle.
A short time later, deputies located the abandoned vehicle on Southampton Road.
Investigators reported finding evidence inside the vehicle indicating the driver may have been injured at some point during the incident.
The driver’s identity has not been determined, and authorities have not announced whether any arrests have been made.
No deputies were injured during the encounter.
At the request of the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.
Once completed, the findings will be submitted to the Clayton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
The investigation remains ongoing.
