Wilmington Island Community Safely Disposes of 80 Pounds of Medications During Drug Take Back Event
WILMINGTON ISLAND, Ga. — In just two and a half hours, members of the Wilmington Island community safely disposed of 80 pounds of unused and expired medications during a Prescription Drug Take Back event hosted by the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials say each medication turned in helps prevent accidental poisoning, prescription misuse, and addiction while also keeping harmful substances out of local waterways. Proper disposal reduces access to unused medications by children, protects seniors, and supports overall public health.
The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office led the initiative as part of ongoing efforts focused on prevention, education, and community safety.
Sheriff Richard S. Coleman emphasized the importance of proactive outreach, stating:
“Protecting our community goes beyond enforcement, it includes prevention. By sponsoring events like this, we are taking meaningful steps to reduce the risk of misuse, protect our families, and promote a safer, healthier community.”
The Sheriff’s Office also thanked Frank Murray and community partners who assisted with the event, along with residents who participated in helping make Wilmington Island safer.
Officials encourage residents to continue using authorized medication disposal programs throughout the year as part of a shared commitment to community wellness and public safety.
