GBI Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting After Armed Carjacking and Pursuit in Clayton County

Clayton County, GA – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that followed an armed carjacking and brief vehicle pursuit Saturday night in Clayton County. One juvenile was shot and injured during the incident. No deputies were hurt.

According to preliminary information, the incident began on Saturday, January 31st, when a woman was carjacked at gunpoint at a gas station near Rex Road and Highway 42 in the Rex area. Investigators say two juveniles pointed a firearm at the victim’s head and fled the scene in her vehicle.

Approximately 30 minutes later, Clayton County Sheriff’s Office deputies located the stolen vehicle on Fielder Road and attempted a traffic stop. The driver refused to stop and fled, leading deputies through the Woodfield area. The vehicle traveled from Fielder Road onto Cambridge Drive and then Bedford Road, where the pursuit ended on a dead-end street in the 6000 block of Bedford Road.

Authorities say both juveniles exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. During the encounter, one deputy fired his weapon, striking one of the juveniles. That individual was transported to the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition with a single injury. The second juvenile was tased, apprehended without further incident, medically evaluated by EMS, and then transported to a youth detention center.

As required by protocol, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was notified and has assumed responsibility for the investigation. The Georgia State Patrol was also notified due to the use of a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) during the incident.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Once completed, the case will be turned over to the Clayton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
