GBI Investigates Self-Inflicted Shooting During Butts County Traffic Stop

Jackson, GA – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is handling a shooting incident that occurred during a traffic stop on Monday, December 1, 2025, in Jackson, Georgia. The Butts County Sheriff’s Office requested GBI involvement.

Authorities had been attempting to locate 74-year-old Carl Eugene Clark of Athens, GA, who was wanted on charges of Aggravated Assault. Deputies and other law enforcement officers stopped Clark’s vehicle during the pursuit. During the traffic stop, Clark reportedly shot himself.

He was immediately transported to a local hospital and is currently in stable condition.

The investigation remains active. Once complete, the case will be reviewed by the Towaliga Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.
