Conviction Secured in 2023 Sylvester Murder and Aggravated Assault

Following an extensive investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and their law enforcement partners, a conviction has been obtained in the 2023 murder of David Lee ‘Bubba’ Stephens III and the aggravated assault of Calvin Matthew Oliver in Sylvester, GA.

GBI Director Chris Hosey praised the outcome, stating, “This conviction is a testament to the tireless work of our agents and local law enforcement partners. We remain committed to seeking justice for victims and their families across Georgia.”

On Thursday, May 15, 2025, it was announced that 19-year-old Keymon Brown, also known as “Peebo,” was found guilty for the murder of David Lee “Bubba” Stephens, III, and the aggravated assault of Calvin Matthew Oliver, which occurred on June 10, 2023.

The shooting of Stephens and Oliver, who were first cousins, took place on South Jefferson Street in Sylvester, an area locally known as “the boot.”

According to the District Attorney’s Office, following the guilty verdict, Brown was sentenced to life in prison, followed by an additional 10 years to be served consecutively.

The case was successfully prosecuted by Chief Assistant District Attorney Melanie Brogden Cooksey, with significant support from Special Agent Kaitlyn Hardy of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations and Detective Daniel Mothershed of the Sylvester Police Department. Also providing crucial assistance were District Attorney’s Office Investigator Jacob Teter, Victim Advocate Simona Hernandez, and Administrative Assistant Abby Alvis.
