Gwinnett County Jail Resumes Operations After Active Shooter Incident

The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office has announced that normal operations have resumed at the Gwinnett County Jail following an active shooter situation that occurred on October 7, 2024. The facility is now open to the public, and all services have returned to standard procedures.

During a media press conference on October 7, Sheriff Keybo Taylor provided details about the incident, which began when a subject, exhibiting erratic behavior, arrived at the Gwinnett Justice Administration Center. Upon confrontation by GCSO deputies, the individual returned to his vehicle, retrieved a firearm, and opened fire. GCSO deputies responded immediately, returning fire and injuring the subject, who was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Sheriff Taylor stated, “I want to assure the community that there is no ongoing threat to the public’s safety. I commend the actions of the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office deputies for their quick and decisive response that allowed us to bring this incident to the best possible conclusion. I also thank all members of the Gwinnett County Police Department and Lawrenceville Police Department for their assistance.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has taken over the active investigation, and the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office will continue to keep the public informed regarding the situation.

Previously, operations at the jail had been limited to the intake of arrestees, and no new intakes were accepted during the incident. Traffic approaching the jail was redirected as authorities managed the situation.
