Macon Rosa Parks Square Rededication Set for Blue Star, Gold Star Markers

MACON, Georgia – Macon-Bibb County will hold a rededication ceremony for the Blue Star and Gold Star Families Memorial Markers at Rosa Parks Square in downtown Macon on Tuesday, November 10, at 10 a.m. The markers are returning to the park after its transformation earlier this year.

The ceremony comes the day before Veterans Day.

The markers were first dedicated at Rosa Parks Square in 2016. County officials describe them as lasting reminders of the courage, service and sacrifice of military members and their loved ones.

What each marker honors

The Blue Star Memorial Marker honors all men and women who have served, are serving or will serve in the United States Armed Forces.

The Gold Star Families Memorial Marker recognizes families whose loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the country.

History of the program

The Blue Star Memorial Program dates to 1944. That year, the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs planted 8,000 dogwood trees as a living tribute to World War II veterans. The National Council of State Garden Clubs adopted the program the following year and placed memorial markers along highways across the country.

The blue star became a symbol of military service during World War II. Families displayed it on flags and banners to recognize loved ones serving in the Armed Forces. In 2015, the program expanded to include Gold Star Families Memorial Markers for families who lost loved ones in service.

County officials said the markers’ return to the reimagined square gives the community a place for reflection, remembrance and gratitude. The ceremony is a Macon-Bibb County event.
