Gwinnett Police Aviation Unit Helps Capture Burglary Suspects After Armed Escape
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A burglary suspect and a juvenile accomplice were arrested after the Gwinnett County Police Department’s Aviation Unit tracked their vehicle from the air, allowing officers to avoid a dangerous vehicle pursuit.
According to police, officers responded on June 20 to a reported burglary in progress after witnesses saw two men break into a business.
Before officers arrived, the witnesses watched the suspects run from the store. When the witnesses shouted that the suspects had a gun, police said one of the men pointed a firearm at them before both suspects fled in a vehicle.
Fortunately, the department’s Aviation Unit was already airborne and quickly located the suspect vehicle.
The aircraft maintained continuous visual contact while providing real-time updates to officers on the ground. When patrol officers arrived at the vehicle’s location, the suspects fled before officers could make contact.
Rather than initiating a vehicle pursuit, officers backed off while Aviation continued tracking the suspects from above.
The aircraft followed the vehicle into DeKalb County while coordinating with DeKalb County law enforcement.
The suspects eventually abandoned the vehicle behind a business and fled on foot. After a brief chase, officers arrested 22-year-old Travon Davis and a juvenile.
Both were returned to Gwinnett County.
Davis was charged with:
- Burglary
- Theft by Taking
- Possession of Tools for the Commission of a Crime
- Criminal Damage to Property
- Conspiracy to Commit a Felony
- Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
- Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
- Wearing a Mask to Conceal Identity
- Fleeing from Police
- Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor
Police also discovered Davis had an outstanding probation violation warrant.
He was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail.
The juvenile was also charged in connection with the burglary and was released to a parent.
