Man Jailed After Woman Shot in Head at Meriwether County Convenience Store

UTHERSVILLE, Ga. — A Greenville man has been arrested after investigators say he shot a woman in the head during a domestic-related incident at a Meriwether County convenience store parking lot.

According to the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at approximately 6:48 p.m. on June 21, 2026, after receiving a 911 call reporting a shooting at 5428 Luthersville Road in Luthersville. The incident occurred in the parking lot of the Sunoco Station, commonly known locally as Gentry’s Country Store, near the intersection of Luthersville Road and Rocky Mount Road.

When deputies arrived, they found an adult woman inside a vehicle suffering from an apparent single gunshot wound to the head.

Deputies secured the scene while personnel from Meriwether County Fire Rescue and EMS provided emergency medical treatment. The victim was stabilized and airlifted to an Atlanta-area trauma center for further care.

Investigators with the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division responded to the scene and launched an extensive investigation.

Authorities said investigators conducted numerous interviews, reviewed surveillance footage, processed evidence at the scene, pursued investigative leads, and executed search warrants as part of the case.

The investigation ultimately determined the shooting was an isolated domestic-related incident and that there was no ongoing threat to the public.

As a result of the investigation, warrants were obtained for 41-year-old Deshontae Chaiman Clements of Greenville.

Clements was charged with Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime. He was taken into custody and booked into the Meriwether County Jail, where he is being held without bond.

The victim remains hospitalized in stable but critical condition, according to authorities.

Sheriff Chuck Smith said investigators worked throughout the night and traveled to the Atlanta trauma center to gather additional information while the victim received lifesaving treatment.

“We understand the public’s interest whenever a serious incident like this occurs, and we are committed to keeping our community informed,” Smith said. “Our investigators worked diligently to verify the facts before releasing information publicly while also protecting the integrity of this active criminal investigation.”

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities said additional charges are possible.
