Robbery Suspect Shot by Clayton County Deputies After Pursuit on I-285
CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A suspect is in critical but stable condition after being shot by deputies following a pursuit connected to a robbery investigation, according to authorities.
The incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. on April 7, 2026, when Clayton County Sheriff’s Office deputies located a vehicle believed to be involved in a robbery reported about an hour earlier.
According to the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, multiple gunmen armed with assault rifle-style rifles held up a victim, stealing a cell phone and a firearm.
Deputies initiated a pursuit, which ended after they performed a PIT maneuver to disable the vehicle on Interstate 285 near Riverdale Road in Atlanta.
Authorities said one of the occupants, later identified as 28-year-old Deshante Phillips of Atlanta, fled the vehicle on foot. Deputies pursued Phillips, and during that encounter, he was shot.
Officials said the suspect was struck in the arm and leg. He was transported to an area hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition. No deputies were injured.
Four suspects were taken into custody in connection with the incident: Monterrian Stone, 18; Ranardo Goodwin, 18; Deshante Martez Phillips, 28; and a 14-year-old juvenile, whose identity has not been released.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to lead the investigation. Once complete, the case will be turned over to the Clayton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
The investigation remains ongoing.
