Macon 68-year-old Man Arrested After Shoplifting Incident, Struggle with Deputies

MACON, Ga. — A 68-year-old man is facing multiple charges after allegedly shoplifting from a Family Dollar and resisting arrest, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched around 8:39 a.m. Wednesday to the Family Dollar located at 3190 Mercer University Drive following a report of shoplifting. Witnesses told authorities the suspect left the store on foot heading west along Mercer University Drive.

While en route, deputies spotted the suspect near Woodrow Place. Officials said the man immediately fled, leading to a foot pursuit.

During the chase, deputies issued verbal commands for the suspect to stop and deployed a Taser, which was unsuccessful. Authorities said the suspect then became combative with the deputy before being restrained with the assistance of a second deputy.

The suspect was identified as Burnice Freeman of Macon. Deputies said he was found in possession of the stolen merchandise, which was later returned to the store. Witnesses also confirmed Freeman as the individual involved in the theft.

Freeman was taken to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center and charged with theft by shoplifting, felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and simple battery of a law enforcement officer.

Officials also said Freeman had an outstanding warrant out of Monroe County. He is currently being held without bond.
