Man Dies After Taser Deployment During Domestic Call in Richmond County

HEPHZIBAH, Georgia – An investigation is underway after a man died following a law enforcement encounter during a domestic violence call in Richmond County.

Deputies with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded around 8:08 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, 2026, to the 4200 block of James Drive.

When deputies arrived, they located the suspect, identified as 34-year-old Jonathan Aaron McElroy, and attempted to take him into custody. Authorities said McElroy was non-compliant, and a Taser was deployed.

While still on scene, McElroy became unresponsive. He was transported to Wellstar Medical Center for treatment.

According to officials, McElroy was pronounced dead shortly after midnight on March 23.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Regional Use of Force Team has been notified and will lead the investigation into the incident.

No additional details have been released at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.
