Gunman Killed After Shooting Officer, 6-Hour Standoff in Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, Georgia – A gunman is dead and three officers were injured following a shooting and hours-long standoff late Thursday night in Gainesville.
Officers responded just after 10:30 p.m. to the area of Briarwood Drive and Skyline Drive after a distressed caller reported that a man at her residence had threatened her life.
As officers arrived and attempted to make contact, one Gainesville Police officer was struck by gunfire from the suspect. Another officer returned fire.
Following the initial exchange, the suspect barricaded himself inside a nearby residence.
The wounded officer was transported to a medical center and is reported to be in stable condition. Officials believe the officer’s ballistic vest helped prevent more serious injuries.
Multiple agencies, including the Hall County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team, Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, Flowery Branch Police, and other neighboring departments, responded to assist.
Efforts to get the suspect to surrender peacefully turned into a prolonged standoff lasting approximately six hours. During that time, the suspect fired additional shots from inside the residence.
The situation escalated when the suspect exited the home and again opened fire on officers. Two additional Gainesville Police officers were transported to the hospital for evaluation and are also reported to be in stable condition.
The suspect, an adult male, was shot during the encounter. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to conduct an independent officer-involved shooting investigation.
Authorities say the case remains active and ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
