Clayton County Jury Convicts Man In Deadly Shooting Witnessed By Children
Dontavious Carr

JONESBORO, Georgia – A Clayton County jury has found Dontavius Carr guilty in a 2022 shooting that left one man dead and multiple others threatened inside a home.

The verdict, announced following a trial that concluded on March 12, 2026, includes convictions for malice murder, two counts of felony murder, aggravated assault, family violence, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, multiple additional aggravated assault charges, two counts of cruelty to children in the third degree, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Prosecutors said the shooting occurred on May 2, 2022, when Carr shot and killed Arfredrick Magby, Jr. inside a residence. The incident unfolded in the presence of Carr’s two minor children and their mother.

According to evidence presented at trial, after fatally shooting Magby, Carr turned the gun on the children’s mother and two other women inside the home. When a relative attempted to help the victim, Carr threatened her with the firearm before fleeing the scene.

Authorities said Carr remained at large for more than a year before he was eventually located and taken into custody.

During the trial, prosecutors introduced evidence of prior incidents involving Carr and two of the women in the home, showing a pattern of violence. Investigators said the motive for the shooting was jealousy tied to a relationship involving the mother of Carr’s children and the victim.

The case was prosecuted by the Clayton County District Attorney’s Office. Sentencing is scheduled for March 31, 2026.
