Former Jefferson Police Sergeant Arrested on Multiple Charges After GBI Investigation
Jefferson, GA — A former Jefferson police sergeant has been arrested and charged following an investigation into alleged misconduct during a domestic-related call.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced that Jose Marrero, 45, of Pendergrass, was arrested and charged with Party to a Crime, Criminal Damage to Property, Violation of Oath of Office, Criminal Trespass and Terroristic Threats.
According to the GBI, the Jefferson Police Department requested assistance with the investigation on February 23, 2026.
The investigation stems from an incident that occurred on February 22 around 4:30 a.m. when Jefferson police officers responded to a home on Academy Woods Drive following a 911 call involving a domestic issue between occupants.
Investigators said Marrero and another responding officer quickly determined the situation was a civil matter.
However, the investigation found that Marrero committed several criminal acts while handling the call.
Authorities say Marrero allowed two individuals to kick in a door, threatened to use a Taser on an occupant and entered the home without legal authority.
Marrero turned himself in to the Jackson County Jail on March 6 without incident. The JPD fired Marrero, a nine year veteran.
“The allegations against this officer are serious and do not represent the core values of this department. We requested that the GBI conduct a thorough, impartial investigation. We are committed to accountability and maintaining the trust of the community we serve,” said Jefferson Police Chief Steven Bannister.
Officials said the investigation remains active and ongoing. Once completed, the case will be forwarded to the Piedmont Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
