High-Tech Police Cameras Track and Arrest Man for UGA Student Rape
ATHENS, GA — A 19-year-old Athens man is behind bars after investigators used a downtown camera network to track his movements following a violent sexual assault of a University of Georgia (UGA) student. Tydarius Wingfield was arrested on Saturday, February 28, 2026, and faces multiple felony charges.
The incident occurred in the early morning hours in the 400 block of North Thomas Street.
The Incident: A Walk Home Turned Violent
According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department (ACCPD), the assault began around 1:38 a.m. when Wingfield approached a female UGA student who was walking alone.
- The Approach: Wingfield, who was unknown to the victim, requested to walk her home.
- The Attack: During the interaction, Wingfield allegedly forced the woman behind a nearby building, where he sexually assaulted her.
- The Aftermath: The victim reported the rape shortly after, prompting an immediate response from patrol officers and detectives.
Real-Time Tracking and Capture
The arrest was made possible by the ACCPD Real Time Crime Center (RTCC). Using a sophisticated downtown camera system, investigators were able to:
- Observe the Crime Scene: Confirm the location and timing of the incident.
- Monitor Movements: Track the movements of both the victim and Wingfield before and after the assault.
- Positive Identification: Officers used the high-resolution footage to identify Wingfield as he moved through the downtown district.
Wingfield was located shortly after the incident, brought to police headquarters for questioning, and subsequently charged.
Wingfield is currently held at the Athens-Clarke County Jail on the following charges:
- Rape
- Kidnapping
- Aggravated Sexual Battery
- Battery
