Savannah Woman Arrested in 2024 Fatal Hit-and-Run That Killed Cyclist

SAVANNAH, Georgia – The Savannah Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit, with assistance from the Community Response Team, has arrested 29-year-old Mikeara Gibbons in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that occurred last year.

Officers originally responded around 3:20 a.m. on September 8, 2024, to the 10 block of Derenne Avenue following reports of a traffic accident. When officers arrived, they found an adult male cyclist in critical condition. He was given immediate medical assistance and transported to Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Investigators determined the driver involved fled the scene before police arrived.

According to police, the case required an extensive investigation that lasted approximately a year and a half before charges were filed.

Gibbons was taken into custody on February 19 and charged with homicide by vehicle, serious injury by vehicle, hit-and-run, tampering with evidence, and speeding.
