Macon Man Arrested in Deadly Shooting That Left Mother Dead, Toddler Injured
MACON, Ga. — Investigators with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office have arrested a Macon man in connection with a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a 28-year-old woman and left her 2-year-old daughter injured Tuesday night.
Authorities say 34-year-old Marquiz Deonte Brooks, of Macon, was taken into custody following further investigation into the shooting on Fulton Street. Deputies initially made contact with Brooks as a person of interest while still at the scene. He was transported to the Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division for questioning and later arrested.
Brooks has been charged with murder and aggravated assault. He was booked into the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center just after 10 p.m. and is being held without bond.
What Happened
The incident was reported to the Macon-Bibb Emergency 911 Center just before 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 10, outside a residence in the 300 block of Fulton Street.
When deputies arrived, they found 28-year-old Ayana Smith and her 2-year-old daughter suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics transported both to a local hospital for treatment.
Smith was later pronounced deceased. Her young daughter remains hospitalized in stable condition, according to medical staff.
No other injuries were reported.
