LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — A 17-year-old is dead and four others are facing felony charges following what investigators say was a planned robbery that escalated into a gun battle Monday afternoon in Gwinnett County.

On February 9, 2026, officers with the Gwinnett County Police Department responded to the 1200 block of Barrett Bluff Drive after receiving reports of a person shot. When officers arrived, they found 17-year-old Damonta Sears suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Sears was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

Shortly after the shooting, officers located a vehicle believed to be connected to the incident. Inside were 21-year-old Aldair Hernandez-Moreno and 17-year-old Luis Hernandez-Moreno. Luis had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to the hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening.

Detectives determined that Sears had arrived at the scene with 17-year-old Olvy Calvo-Martinez and 16-year-old Zaire Craig. According to investigators, the group had arranged a narcotics transaction with Luis and Aldair but instead planned to rob them. During the attempted robbery, gunfire was exchanged between the two groups, leaving Sears and Luis wounded.

Calvo-Martinez was arrested and charged with Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Tampering with Evidence, and multiple gang-related charges. Craig faces charges of Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and multiple gang-related charges.

Luis Hernandez-Moreno and Aldair Hernandez-Moreno were also arrested. Both are charged with Felony Murder, Possession of a Schedule I Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony.

The investigation remains ongoing.
