One Man Killed, Another Wounded After Confrontation Turns Violent in Troup County

TROUP COUNTY, Ga. – One man is dead and another remains hospitalized after a shooting Wednesday night at a residence in rural Troup County, according to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched at 7:49 p.m. on Feb. 4 to a reported shooting at 209 Big Springs Mountville Road. When deputies arrived, they found two adult men suffering from gunshot wounds. Deputies immediately began life-saving measures until Fire Department and EMS personnel arrived and took over medical care.

One victim, identified as Jeffery Scott, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, Walter Keene, 50, was transported to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

Investigators identified the suspect as Zachary Thompkins, 32, who was later located at an address on Greenville Road. Deputies took Thompkins into custody without incident.

According to investigators with the sheriff’s office Criminal Investigations Division, Thompkins went to the location to confront one of the victims over a prior disagreement. During the confrontation, Thompkins allegedly produced a firearm, shot both men, and fled the scene.

Thompkins is currently charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

The investigation remains ongoing.
