Man Dies After Early-Morning House Fire in Hartwell

HARTWELL, Georgia – A 29-year-old man was killed early Tuesday after a structure fire broke out at a residence in Hartwell, despite deputies and firefighters making a rescue attempt, authorities said.

According to the Hart County Sheriff’s Office, Hart County 911 received a call at approximately 1:39 a.m. on Feb. 2, 2026, reporting a house fire at 338 Old Sardis Drive. Deputies and Hart County Fire crews responded to the scene and worked to determine whether anyone was inside the home.

Deputies broke a window in an area of the residence where the occupant was known to stay and saw a victim inside the room. Deputies and firefighters were able to remove the individual through the window and began life-saving measures until Hart County EMS arrived.

Despite those efforts, the victim did not survive. He was identified as Jovan Ferronte Patterson, 29, of Hartwell. The Hart County Coroner’s Office also responded to the scene.

The sheriff’s office requested assistance from the Georgia State Fire Marshal’s Office to determine the cause of the fire. That investigation remains ongoing.

Sheriff Chris Carroll praised the actions of first responders. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Carroll said, commending deputies and firefighters for their bravery in attempting to rescue the victim under dangerous conditions.
