Macon Literacy Alliance Earns National Recognition as Family Learning Community

MACON, GA – The Macon-Bibb Mayor’s Literacy Alliance has been recognized by the National Center for Families Learning as a Family Learning Community, an honor announced at NCFL’s most recent annual conference. The designation highlights MBMLA’s leadership in advancing multigenerational literacy and marks an important milestone for the Macon-Bibb County community.

The recognition places MBMLA among a very small group nationwide. Only two communities in the state of Georgia currently hold the Family Learning Community designation, and MBMLA is now one of them. The honor also aligns with NCFL’s national goal of building coordinated, family-learning systems in 60 communities by the year 2030.

According to NCFL, a Family Learning Community is a multigenerational learning system built with and for families. It brings together children, parents and caregivers, educators, service providers, and community institutions in a coordinated way to support learning across all ages. Earning the designation means a community has shown measurable progress toward creating a system where family literacy, adult learning, and child education are intentionally aligned and supported.

For Macon-Bibb, the designation signals that literacy and learning are being addressed not just in classrooms, but at home and throughout the community.

“We are honored to receive this recognition from NCFL and to stand with communities across the country building family-learning systems,” said Jim Montgomery, Executive Director of MBMLA. “This is a clear signal that literacy for children and adults, learning at home and in the community, and family engagement are central to our shared vision of a successful Macon-Bibb. We invite all residents, families, and partners to join us.”

As part of the designation, MBMLA will continue working closely with NCFL and local partners to strengthen and align learning pathways for both children and adults. The organization will also expand community awareness around the importance of literacy at every stage of life.

The Family Learning Community recognition places Macon-Bibb in a selective national network focused on long-term educational success through family-centered learning, reinforcing the county’s growing reputation as a leader in literacy and community engagement.
