Henry County Police Seek Federal Funding for New Pursuit Training Equipment

The Henry County Police Department (HCPD) has applied for a federal grant of $28,974 under the FY24 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program to support its “Henry County Public Safety Initiative.” The funding would be used to purchase Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) bumper kits, aimed at enhancing officer training on the PIT maneuver—a pursuit tactic designed to end vehicle chases quickly and safely, reducing risks to officers, the public, and suspects.

The PIT maneuver, which involves strategically forcing a fleeing vehicle to spin out and stop, requires specialized training to perform safely. The requested equipment would protect training vehicles from costly damage during these exercises. The funds, if approved, would cover 100% of the costs, ensuring no additional expenses to local taxpayers.

Citizens are invited to provide comments or suggestions regarding the proposal. Questions can be directed to Captain William Powell of the HCPD at 770-288-8200 or wpowell@co.henry.ga.us. The grant application is available for public review by appointment at the Henry County Police Department.
