Atlanta Police Gang Unit Reports Success with Operation Heatwave

The Atlanta Police Department’s Gang Unit has reported significant progress in combating gang violence through the use of technology and data-driven strategies. Partnering with state and federal agencies, the unit has focused on high-risk areas and leveraged advanced analytics to track criminal activity.

During the summer of 2024, the annual initiative, known as Operation Heatwave, resulted in 103 arrests and the confiscation of 45 firearms. These efforts contributed to noticeable reductions in homicides, assaults, and robberies across Atlanta.

Building on this momentum, the department has launched Operation Deep Freeze, extending its crime-fighting strategies into the winter months. The Gang Unit aims to maintain pressure on criminal networks and further enhance public safety through continued collaboration and innovative policing methods.
