Unattended Cooking Sparks Fatal Apartment Fire in Roswell, Claims Two Lives and Two Dogs
An early morning apartment fire at the Champions Green Apartment Complex in Roswell claimed the lives of two residents and two dogs on Saturday, October 19, following an incident believed to be caused by unattended cooking. The Roswell Fire Department responded to the blaze at 3:48 a.m., arriving to find heavy smoke emanating from the back of the three-story building.
Firefighters launched an immediate search and rescue effort, locating two individuals inside the affected apartment. Despite efforts to save them, the victims succumbed to their injuries after being transported to a local hospital. Two neighboring units were also impacted, displacing six additional residents who received aid from the Red Cross. Two dogs were discovered deceased in the apartment as well.
Preliminary investigations conducted by the Roswell Fire Department, Roswell Police Department, and the Georgia State Fire Marshal’s Office indicated that the fire was accidental, sparked by unattended cooking. Officials confirmed that smoke alarms were present and operational in the unit during the incident.
“Our deepest sympathies are with the families affected by this devastating loss,” stated Roswell Fire Chief Joe Pennino. “This tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of caution while cooking.”
Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King extended condolences, urging Georgians to establish home fire escape plans, noting, “Knowing how to exit safely and where to meet can make all the difference in an emergency.”
Fire officials continue to emphasize the importance of vigilance in the kitchen, advising residents to stay present while cooking and routinely check smoke alarms to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
