Teen Rescued from Rooftop After Mental Health Crisis in Atlanta
On September 29, 2024, at approximately 4:16 PM, officers responded to a call regarding a suicidal person at 795 North Avenue NE. Upon arrival, they attempted to make contact with a 16-year-old juvenile who was experiencing a mental health crisis. The juvenile fled from his family’s vehicle and ran away from the officers.
His sister, who was also present, eventually located him sitting on the ledge of a nearby building. With the assistance of the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department, officers accessed an exterior ladder and safely made their way to the rooftop.
Once on the roof, officers observed the juvenile attempting to move closer to the edge. Acting quickly, they moved him away from the ledge for his safety. Although the juvenile was initially upset and reluctant to speak, the officers exercised patience. After allowing time for the situation to de-escalate, they were able to communicate effectively, and the juvenile calmed down, complying with their requests to leave the rooftop.
After safely reaching the ground, the juvenile received care and support from the officers. He was treated by EMTs on the scene and subsequently transported to the hospital for further treatment.
This incident highlights the dedication and professionalism of the officers, the City of Atlanta Fire Rescue Department, and Grady Health paramedics in responding to citizens in need.
