Election Officer Appointed to Oversee Voting Integrity and Security for November 2024 General Election

Jill E. Steinberg, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia, announced the appointment of a District Election Officer (DEO) to oversee election-related concerns during the upcoming general election on November 5, 2024. The DEO will handle complaints related to voting rights, threats to election officials, and election fraud, working closely with the Justice Department’s Election Day Program.

Steinberg emphasized the importance of maintaining a fair election, stating, “Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination and to have that vote counted in a fair and free election. Similarly, election officials and staff must be able to serve without being subject to unlawful threats of violence.”

The DEO will be available throughout Election Day to receive complaints regarding federal election law violations. The public can contact the DEO at 912-652-4422. Additionally, the FBI will have agents on standby across the country to investigate election-related crimes, and they can be reached locally at 770-216-3000.

Complaints related to federal voting rights laws can also be directed to the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division via complaint form at https://civilrights.justice.gov/ or by phone at 800-253-3931.

In emergencies involving violence or intimidation at polling places, Steinberg urged the public to call 911 before contacting federal authorities, as state and local police have primary jurisdiction in such cases.
