Armed Robbery Suspect Shot by Officer at Oakland City MARTA Station
At the request of the MARTA Police Department, Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agents are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on the evening of September 30, 2024, in Atlanta. No injuries were reported during the incident.
According to preliminary information, MARTA officers responded to a call about a robbery at the Oakland City MARTA station around 8:05 p.m. Upon arrival, the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Carnell Kelly of Atlanta, fled the scene. Officers pursued Kelly into James Orange Park, where he brandished a knife. Officers ordered Kelly to drop the weapon. During the attempted arrest, Kelly engaged in a struggle with officers and grabbed his knife. During the altercation, an officer’s firearm discharged, though no one was struck by the gunfire.
A Taser was deployed, and Kelly was taken into custody without further incident. Kelly declined medical treatment at the scene and was transported by MARTA police. Charges against Kelly have been filed by MARTA P.D.
The GBI will continue its investigation, and the findings will be submitted to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
