At its regular Council Meeting, the Middle Georgia Regional Commission (MGRC) celebrated the opening of its new offices, marking a significant transition from its previous location on Emery Highway, where it had been for 30 years. The move to the Macon Mall, which has been undergoing a major rejuvenation project, is designed to address the limitations of the former space and improve operational efficiency.

The MGRC’s new offices are strategically located within the Macon Mall, a site that has been revitalized to enhance functionality and support greater teamwork among employees. The renovation project, undertaken in collaboration with Macon-Bibb County and an architectural team, includes modern technology and updated facilities aimed at boosting efficiency and reducing downtime.

“We are excited to be on the forefront of redevelopment in west Macon-Bibb,” said Ms. Mathis. “With the return of day and nighttime activity, the opportunities for new retail, commercial, and residential development are unlimited, providing so much to do for the people and organizations coming to our offices!”

Mayor Lester Miller welcomed the MGRC to the Macon Mall, noting that the addition of the Regional Commission complements other new features in the area, including the Rhythm and Rally indoor pickleball facility and the 10,000+ person Atrium Health Amphitheater. These developments are part of a broader revitalization effort aimed at enhancing the area’s appeal and functionality.

The Macon Mall now houses a range of new offices and facilities, including the Board of Elections, Planning & Zoning, a Middle Georgia Regional Library annex, Building & Fire Safety, and the Mayor’s Literacy Alliance. These additions have already drawn tens of thousands of visitors for various activities such as national tournaments, concerts, and civic events.

Urban Development Authority Executive Director and Macon-Bibb Director of Planning & Public Spaces Alex Morrison emphasized the importance of creating a space that combines convenience and accessibility for residents and officials alike. “Rejuvenating a community means creating a place where we offer people both the things they want and things they need in an area where it’s all easily accessible,” Morrison said.

The MGRC serves 11 counties and 20 cities, providing technical assistance in areas such as planning, economic development, and public administration. The Commission’s Council, comprised of local elected leaders and private sector individuals, oversees its operations.

“These new offices provide such a better environment for our staff and visitors,” Mrs. Mathis added. “From the open areas, overhead music, ability to take a lunch walk inside, and places to eat, we are in such a more inviting environment conducive to helping people.”
