New Speed Limit Enforcement and Camera Updates in Macon-Bibb School Zones

On Monday, September 9, four school zones in Macon-Bibb will see changes in how speed limits are enforced using cameras. The cameras at Vineville Academy of the Arts (2260 Vineville Avenue) and Heritage Elementary School (6050 Thomaston Road) will begin issuing speeding tickets immediately.

New cameras have been installed in the zones for the Academy for Classical Education (5665 New Forsyth Road) and Bernd Elementary School (4160 Ocmulgee East Boulevard). These will start by issuing warnings only, with full enforcement and ticketing beginning on Monday, October 21.

Cameras are currently in use at Carter Elementary, Hartley Elementary, Heard Elementary, Springdale Elementary, Appling Middle & Northeast High, Ballard-Hudson Middle & Ingram-Pye Elementary, Rutland Middle & High, First Presbyterian Day School, Stratford Academy, Southwest High, Weaver Middle, Westside High, and Windsor Academy.

The cameras enforce the speed limit on school days from one hour before the start of school until one hour after dismissal. They monitor both the reduced speed limit during school hours and the regular speed limit at other times. The flashing lights in a school zone only indicate the reduced limit around the beginning and end of the school day.

Citations are issued when a vehicle exceeds the posted speed limit by more than 10 miles per hour. The first citation is $100, and each additional citation is $150. Fines collected are designated solely for local law enforcement or public safety initiatives.

Citations will not affect a person’s driving record or insurance points. All citations are reviewed by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office to ensure compliance with Macon-Bibb’s Code.
