Fugitive Killed in Stockbridge Officer-Involved Shooting, Atlanta Officer Wounded

On August 27, 2024, an officer-involved shooting occurred at 404 Linden Lane, Stockbridge, GA. The Atlanta Police Department’s Fugitive Unit, Georgia State Patrol, and the U.S. Marshals’ Fugitive Task Force were executing a warrant for Derrick Rankins, 33. Rankins was wanted in connection with a domestic violence homicide that took place on August 20, 2024, at 39 Springside Dr. SE, where 32-year-old Courtney Reese, a mother of four, was killed.

Warrants for Rankins were issued the day after Reese’s death. During the operation at Linden Lane, Rankins fired at members of the fugitive task force. An 18-year veteran of the Atlanta Police Department’s Fugitive Unit was injured by a gunshot to the left arm; the officer’s injuries are non-life threatening. Rankins was killed in the exchange of gunfire.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office provided airlifting support, transporting the injured officer to Grady Hospital. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) will investigate the shooting.
